Why I Plan Hub-Based Trips Instead of Nonstop Itineraries
By Vicki Kramer, Travel by Vicki
I hear this from travelers more often than you might think. They come back from two weeks in Europe having visited eight countries, and when I ask what their favorite moment was, they pause. They have to think about it. The whole trip passed in a kind of beautiful, exhausting rush — and the culture, the food, the feeling of actually being somewhere never quite had time to settle in.
That's what led me to plan trips differently.
What Hub-Based Travel Actually Looks Like
Hub travel is simple in concept. Instead of moving from city to city every day or two, you stay in one well-chosen home base and take day trips from there. You unpack once. You learn where the good coffee is. You figure out the rhythm of a neighborhood. And then you go exploring — returning each evening to somewhere that already feels a little like yours.
I recently helped a family of five plan a very special celebration trip. Their eldest had just earned a bachelor's degree — and a trip to England and Wales was the celebratory gift. As a train enthusiast, they came to me already knowing what they wanted: England, Wales, trains, and time to breathe. My job was to take that vision and make it real.
They chose Shrewsbury as their base — a charming historic market town perfectly positioned for day excursions to the heritage railways of Britain. From there, they visited the Severn Valley Railway in the English countryside, the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways winding through Snowdonia, and the Talyllyn Railway along the southern Welsh coast.
Each day was its own adventure. Each evening they returned to a beautiful 18th-century manor house hotel on 15 acres of grounds, where High Tea was served daily and the gardens were waiting.
After nearly a week, they shifted their base to London for the final leg — exploring the city at their own pace, with the freedom to discover what called to them rather than following a prescribed route.
Here's what they said when they returned:
"Vicki put together the trip of a lifetime for us! She delivered above and beyond. I kept thinking of different things to add or switch around and she accommodated it all. The flights, hotels, destinations and everything was perfect... One of the most amazing experiences of our lives that we will never forget."
What a Rigid Itinerary Steals From You
When you're moving every day, you spend an enormous amount of mental energy on logistics — packing, checkout times, finding the next hotel, orienting yourself to a new neighborhood, figuring out where to eat when you're already tired. By the time you've sorted all of that, the day is half gone.
Hub travel gives that energy back to you. It gives you the mental space to notice things. To linger over lunch. To wander down a street that wasn't in any guidebook. To say yes when a local recommends something unexpected, because you're not on a schedule that punishes spontaneity.
There's also something to be said for what happens on the second and third day in the destination you've chosen. The first day, you're orienting. The second day, you start to see. The third day, you begin to feel it — the pace, the light, the particular way life is lived there.
Most checklist itineraries never get past day one.
The Details That Make It Work
Hub-based travel sounds simple, but the planning behind it isn't. The magic is in the choices — the right base location, accommodations that feel like an experience rather than just a place to sleep, day trip options matched to the specific interests and pace of the people traveling.
For this client, that meant researching which heritage railways operated on which days of the week so there were no disappointments. It meant coordinating rental cars, pre-booked train tickets, and private transfers so that every handoff was seamless.
It also meant working with trusted partners. I rely on a small group of experienced suppliers for European land arrangements. They manage the details with professionalism and are available around the clock if anything unexpected happens while clients are traveling.
That combination — careful planning on the front end, reliable support on the back end — allows travelers to truly relax. It's what turns a good vacation into the kind of trip you describe as one of the most amazing experiences of your life.
That's what I aim for every single time.
